How to Clean Sponge Daubers

How to Clean Sponge Daubers

Stampin Up Canada Sponge Daubers

Happy 10/10/10! The tenth day of the tenth month of the tenth year.

My office was a mess and I have been spending some time cleaning it up and putting things away over the last few days. My supplies all have homes and most drawers are even labelled but when I get busy I tend to start piling things up instead of putting them away. Once I can no longer think and be creative in my office it’s time for a major clean up.

Yesterday I decided to tackle my drawer of sponges and sponge daubers pictured below. Some daubers had been used with chalks, some with craft ink and some with classic ink. The sponge daubers had been used in every colour under the rainbow.

Someone had once recommended cleaning my sponge daubers in the washing machine so I decided to give it a try.

I placed the sponge daubers into a lingerie bag and washed them in my washing machine in cold water on the hand wash cycle,

Once washed, the sponge daubers were still stained with colour but it was noticeably lighter on many of the sponge daubers.

I left the sponge daubers standing upright overnight to dry.

To see if washing the sponge daubers in the washing machine had made a difference, I took the sponge daubers that were stained with the darkest colours and ran them across a piece of Whisper White cardstock.

To my surprise, the sponge daubers did not transfer any colour to the paper.

I am still planning to use my sponge daubers with similar colours to those they were used with previously but I think cleaning the daubers will let me use many of them for a longer time.

One drawer down, so many to go!

Simple Saturday – A Sweet & Sour Thank You Card

Simple Saturday – A Sweet & Sour Thank You Card

Stampin Up Canada Sweet & Sour DSP

Today’s Simple Saturday card uses only two colours – Rose Red and Pumpkin Pie.

And these two colours are both used in the Sweet & Sour Specialty designer series paper (DSP) package shown on page 172 of the Idea Book & Catalogue so it seemed only natural to include this DSP in my card making as well.

I created a card of Whisper White and added a piece of Pumpkin Pie cardstock that is 4-1/2″ x 3-1/4″. The right hand side corners were rounded with the corner punch.   The next layer of cardstock is Rose Red and measures 4-1/4″ x 3″. Again, the right hand corners were rounded with the corner rounder punch. The last layer is Whisper White and measures 4″ x 2-3/4″ and of course, the corners were rounded also.

I stamped the “thanks so much” greeting from the Three Little Words stamp set in Rose Red ink. I positioned the greeting on the right hand side of the Whisper White cardstock a little ways up from the bottom.

The Sweet & Sour DSP was cut 1-1/2″ wide and adhered to the Whisper White over four 3/4″ punched circles that alternate between Rose Red and Pumpkin Pie. The last step was adding a length of Pumpkin Pie grosgrain ribbon on top of the punched circles where they meet the cardstock.

Quick and easy card making for Simple Saturday.

An Illuminated Growing Green Card

An Illuminated Growing Green Card

 Stampin Up Canada Growing Green

I just ordered and received this stamp set, Growing Green, yesterday and I had to create a card with it right away.

I used the largest flower for this card but there are also 3 smaller flowers that will be making appearances in my stamping soon. Did I mention I really wanted this set and had been waiting impatiently for it to arrive?

For this card, I stamped the image with Basic Black Craft ink and heat embossed it with black embossing powder and the heat tool. Then to add a little bling, I coloured in the flowers with the Illuminate Top Coat Smooch Accent ink (page 195 of the Idea Book & Catalogue). This ink adds sparkle to the image but very little colour. The Smooch Accent Inks are applied with an applicator similar to nail polish so you can control placement of the inks. Scroll down to see a close up of the card.

When using the Smooch Accent inks,  I like to heat emboss with powder first to make staying in the lines easier.

I layered Poppy Parade cardstock that had been embossed with the Perfect Polka Dots folder onto the Basic Black card and added a strip of Basic Black cardstock over the Poppy Parade. To the image piece, I added three black brads that were aligned with the Mat Pack and a greeting from the Fabulous Phrases stamp set. I was so glad that the new oval punch from the Holiday Mini fit my greeting perfectly. So I just punched and added it to the card with dimensioanls. Stamping is so easy when your products work together so well.

Oh, so simple! Northern Flurry Card

Oh, so simple! Northern Flurry Card

Stampin Up Canada Northern Flurry Card

Do you need to make a lot of cards this Christmas?

A card like this one makes good use of your resources – time and money.

Assuming that you have a Christmas greeting stamp, ink to match your darkest cardstock and a Big Shot die-cutting machine, you can make 144 of this card for only 78 cents per card.

Here is what you need:

3 packages of Rose Red Cardstock for the card (3 x $8.50)

1 package of Whisper White Cardstock for the middle layer ($9.25)

2 packages of Pretty in Pink cardstock for the top layer (2 x $8.50)

3 rolls of Pretty in Pink Satin Ribbon (3 x $12.25)

2 packages of Basic Rhinestones (2 x $6.50)

Northern Flurry Embossing Folder ($10.95)

Of course, you can make this card in any colour combination. I think it would look great in blues.

And this card can be made very quickly. Once the cardstock is embossed, the assembly is quick.

Tip: when your kids are sitting in front of the TV, place the Big Shot in front of them on a small table and let them emboss the cardstock. The kids don’t even realize they are working and it cuts down on the fighting, too!

Gifts of Christmas Card

Some days I just need to layer. And this card definitely has lots and lots of layers of cardstock.

I decided to use one of my favourite colour combinations for this card – Not Quite Navy, Baja Breeze and Sahara Sand.

The various colours were mixed in different orders to make the elements of the card.

I stamped the large image onto Whisper White cardstock with Not Quite Navy ink. This image is great because it has the greeting and image all  in one. And the other images in this set are great for inside the card, as shown below, or can be used to make a completely different looking card.

The only embellishment is the Petals-A-Plenty embossing folder and dimensionals under the stamped piece.

A really simple card but the layers of cardstock make it special.
